England’s monasteries were at the cutting-edge of medieval music-making. They perfected the haunting melody of plainchant and pioneered the rich and colourful performance of polyphony. On the eve of the Reformation, the most ambitious musicians – singers, organists and composers – gravitated to the great, old abbey churches.
Drawing on the latest research into this early music – which today is rarely heard live – Exeter University Chapel Choir present a programme which recreates the sound that filled these ancient buildings before Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries.
