There were three nunneries in Devon in the medieval period and they survived until Henry VIII’s suppression of all the religious houses. Two belonged to the Augustinian order (Canonsleigh Abbey near Burlescombe and Cornworthy Priory near Totnes) and one was a Benedictine house (St Katherine’s Priory at Polsloe). This illustrated talk will look at the life of those houses from their foundation until the dissolution. It will also discuss what remains of them for the visitor today.
