SUMMARY:All Hallows’ Performance of “In The Stones” – a new play fo
r St Nicholas Priory by Troubadour Stageworks
DESCRIPTION:\n\nAs part of our All Hallows’ day of music\, tales and fun\
, Troubadour present this new play that weaves folklore\, history\, myth a
nd music into a tale adapted for St Nicholas Priory!\n\nIt is dusk\, and C
hilde Rowland and his sister Burd Ellen are whiling away time outside the
priory. When Rowland throws a ball high over the building\, he and his sis
ter race for it – each taking one side of the building. Childe Rowland r
uns left – clockwise – but Burd Ellen goes ‘widdershins’ – anti-
clockwise\, and vanishes.\nChilde Rowland retrieves the ball\, but finds h
imself alone. Burd Ellen has fallen into The Other Side of Things – a
parallel world that lives in the stones of the priory\, where all the stor
ies and scenes of past long gone meld and replay continuously. Out of sync
\, out of time.\nThis October\, Troubadour Stageworks presents a new play
that explores the world of local folklore around us.\nUsing music\, local
customs and strange stories the narrative slips seamlessly through time an
d brings to the priory\, vibrant with local lore\, a new flash of inventiv
e drama. Suitable for all ages.\n\n\nSt Nicholas Priory\n\nFounded by Will
iam the Conqueror in 1087\, St Nicholas Priory was home to Benedictine mon

SUMMARY:Volunteer Fundraiser: Golden Age of the Lute in England c.1570 –
 c.1620
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]St Nicholas Priory’s volun
teer team invites you warmly to support their fundraiser!\n\nGolden Age of
the Lute in England c.1570 – c.1620: A musically illustrated talk by Al
an Hoyle\n\nIt may well be that some of the monks in St Nicholas’s Prior
y in Exeter played the lute as an accompaniment to worship and/or an aid t
o spiritual contemplation – we shall probably never know. There can be v
ery little doubt\, however\, that the sound of the lute was part of the ev
eryday life of the building after its conversion to Tudor townhouse. In fa
ct\, the golden years of the former priory’s function as a town-house fo
r local gentry coincide exactly with the ‘Golden Age of the Lute in Engl
and’ – the lute can be no stranger to this building.\n\nThe lute seems
to have been slow to take hold in England but\, when it did\, it was soon
producing composers of the highest quality\, admired and played across Eu
rope.\n\nAlan Hoyle – a volunteer at the Priory for some years now – w
ill chart the rise and decline of the lute in England\, and play a number
of pieces of the beautiful solo music of that Golden Age.\n\nSt Nicholas P
riory: Founded by William the Conqueror in 1087\, St Nicholas Priory was h
ome to Benedictine monks for over 400 years and is the oldest building in
Exeter. In 1536\, like other monasteries\, it was closed and the remains b
ecame the home of wealthy Tudor merchants.\n\nDirections: St Nicholas Prio
ry is in Mint Lane with walking access from Fore Street or Bartholomew Str
eet West.\nThe nearest car park is Mary Arches Street (5 mins). Parking at
Smythen Street and Harlequin Shopping Centre is also available. Exeter Ce
ntral railway station (10 mins). The bus station is a 15-minute walk away
with many buses stopping on the High Street (1o mins).\n\nAccess: Unfortun
ately\, only the ground floor of our building is wheelchair-accessible.\n\
nFacilities: Accessible loos and nappy-changing facilities.\n\nIf you have
any questions or concerns about your visit\, please email admin@nicholasp

SUMMARY:Queer Baroque - Joe Levy\, 7:30pm
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Pride month 2023\, countertenor Joe Levy expl
ores the relationship between Classical music and the LGBTQIA+ community w
ith ‘Queer Baroque’. Accompanied on the piano by Konstantinos Terzakis
\, Joe is performing two concerts at St Nicholas’ Priory\, Exeter’s ol
 dest building\, on 9th and 23d June 2023 at 7.30pm.\n\nWith a focus on the
Baroque period\, the concerts will reveal not only queer composers of the
time (Handel\, Lully)\, but also how music from other artists have become
part of LGBTQIA+ history and culture. Baroque culture can often challenge
our understanding of historical attitudes towards gender and sexuality\,
whether that be through fashion or through the personal histories of peopl
e at the time. ‘Queer Baroque’ will attempt to illuminate this\, provi
ding valuable insight on how we can celebrate queer artists and their cont
ribution to society today.\n\nWe'll run a bar and look forward to celebrat
ing together. Thank you to the Co-op for sponsoring our event!\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Sunday Opening 1pm-4pm
DESCRIPTION:St Nicholas Priory is excited to welcome you back! Do come and
join us to soak up the history of Exeter’s oldest building and this quie
t corner of the city.\n\nFounded by William the Conqueror in 1087\, St Nic

ldest building in Exeter. In 1536\, like other monasteries\, it was closed
and the remains became the home of wealthy Tudor merchants.\n\nThis event
has FREE admission\, but donations are gratefully received through our do
 nation button: click here!\n\n&nbsp\;
